Ryan O'Reilly demanded $8 million per season from Avalanche

Former Colorado Avalanche center Ryan O’Reilly wanted to become the NHL’s youngest player making $8 million. In negotiations with the Avalanche, O'Reilly demanded $64 million over eight years, equaling an $8 million cap hit.

O’Reilly is 24 years old, and apparently not thrilled with his $6.2 million salary in 2015-16. He wants to become the only $8 million man under 25 years of age. In comparison, Steven Stamkos has a $7.5 million cap hit. Stamkos has 276 goals in 492 regular-season games. O’Reilly has 90 goals in 427 games.

Because of his unreasonable salary demands, the Avalanche traded Ryan O'Reilly along with Jamie McGinn to the Buffalo Sabres for Mikhail Grigorenko, Nikita Zadorov, J.T. Compher and the 31st overall pick.
