Maple Leafs Forced to Pay Compensation to Devils for Poaching Lou Lamoriello
The Toronto Maple Leafs shocked the hockey world when they poached Lou Lamoriello to be the team's next general manager. However, the hire will come with a price. The Maple Leafs will be forced to compensate the New Jersey Devils for the poaching in the form of a Toronto third round draft pick.
Given the Leafs long term rebuild plan, the loss of a third round draft pick is not likely to have an impact on the organization. For the Devils, it replaces the third round draft pick they lost to the Penguins when they hired head coach, John Hynes.
In this case, the compensations seems appropriate unlike when a team is forced to pay compensation for the hiring of a head coach that was already fired.
