After being eliminated in the first round by the St. Louis Blues, the Chicago Blackhawks set out to start figuring out what to do. General manager Stan Bowman needed to make room for Artemi Panarin and Andrew Shaw, who need new contracts. At a $4 million cap hit, Bryan Bickell did not perform well for the Blackhawks and was on the chopping block.

The Carolina Hurricanes, a team in need of forward depth, agreed to take on Bickell on the condition that former 1st round pick Teuvo Teravainen was included. The Blackhawks traded Bickell and Teravainen to the Hurricanes for a second round pick in 2016 and a third round pick in 2017.

For the Blackhawks, this deal allowed them to clear up Bickell's cap space, allowing them possibly to re-sign Panarin and Shaw. For the Hurricanes, this trade improved their forward depth.
