NHL Trade Rumors: Marc-Andre Fleury to Calgary Flames
Marc-Andre Fleury was the Pittsburgh Penguins MVP during the 2016 NHL regular season, winning 35 games, and getting his team a playoff berth. Backup goaltender, Matt Murray, took over when Fleury was injured with a concussion.
Fleury came back from injury and played one game in the playoffs, and he struggled. For a goaltender with an annual cap hit of $5 million for three more seasons, Fleury does not perform well enough in the playoffs.
Matt Murray makes $620,000 next season, and will ask for a $5 million annual salary raise as a restricted free agent next summer. The Penguins are currently $2.5 million over the $71.4 salary cap. Murray, who is 22 years old, is the Penguins future goalie.
Now is the ideal time to trade Fleury to free up cap space. Eric Francis says the Flames are close to making a trade for Fleury.
Flames GM Brad Treliving is well aware of the possible fit and, as should be expected from the diligent workhorse, he's been in contact with Rutherford.
The Flames would likely be happy to part with a prospect and one or two of the draft picks they've been stockpiling to help make the deal.
