NHL Rumors: Red Wings goalie demands a massive pay raise
The Detroit Red Wings have yet to come to terms with their starting goaltender, Petr Mrazek, who is a restricted free agent. Mrazek's last contract was for one year and paid him $740K.
The 24 year old goalie had a breakout season and is demanding a massive raise for his new contract. According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the Wings offered a two year contract worth $2.7 million in the first year and $3.15 million in the second year. Mrazek is demanding much more - $5 million in both years.
The Red Wings other goaltender, Jimmy Howard, is signed until 2018-19 to a $5.3 million AAV contract. The Wings attempted to trade Howard and had no takers, leaving them with a large salary committed to a backup goalie.
The Red Wings are in a bind and may be forced to spend over $10 million on two goalies. It's likely an arbitrator will be needed to reach a decision concerning Mrazek.
