RUMOR: 23-year old forward to Montreal
The Montreal Canadiens have demonstrated interest for forward Andreas Athanasiou who is currently a Restricted Free Agent.
The Hockey News has recently reported that Detroit Red Wings' GM Ken Holland might not actively try and trade the forward but is listening to offers from other teams. Montreal GM Marc Bergevin has reportedly contacted Holland about Athanasiou.
The Ottawa Senators and the Los Angeles Kings have also contacted the Detroit Red Wings about Athanasiou. TSN's Bob MacKenzie has stated that the Red Wings aren't in a rush to trade the 23-year old, but might for the right price. They are reportedly for a forward with the same offensive skill and is the same age or younger than number 72.
According to CapFriendly, the Red and White are sitting at exactly $75 million in salary cap, which is the maximum a team could have, with only 22 players on their roster. The Wings would have to either trade or waive a player so they could add Athanasiou or anyone else.
The Ontarian is currently training in Switzerland with the HC Lugano, his agent has reported that the situation may be dealt with within next week. Athanasiou and the Red Wings failed to come to terms during the off-season. In 64 games last season, Athanasiou scored 18 goals in a 29 point total.
If the Montreal Canadiens were to offer a player or a pick for the forward, who should they offer?
