Rumors: Tuukka Rask on the trade block

The Boston Bruins are a team in transition at the moment. With a core of Bergeron, Krejci, Backes, Chara and Rask all on the wrong side of 30, the team is ushering in a new core with several solid prospects in the system and on the starting roster.

But with every rebuild, a team needs to be torn down first, and there are rumors of star goaltender Tuukka Rask being on first that list.

The former Vezina trophy winner has stood on his head for the team for most of his time with Boston, since being acquired from Toronto in 2006 for Andrew Raycroft. However it would appear Rask is having somewhat of a fall from grace this season, boasting a 2.89 GAA and an .897 save percentage in 12 games this year.

In contrast, Anton Khudobin is having a stellar season thus far, with a 2.22 GAA and a .932 save percentage.

Of course this begs the question, who is willing to trade for Rask? The 30-year old carries a 7 million dollar cap hit until the end of the 2020-2021 season, and he has a M-NTC (8 teams he can be traded to) as well. So if there are any teams out there that would want Rask, he would have to give the OK in the majority of situations.

On top of those challenges for trading away Rask, Khudobin's strong play of late may just be a flash in the pan. The 31-year old split time in both the NHL and AHL last season, finishing his NHL season with a 2.64 GAA and .904 save percentage. It's hard to believe Khudobin can keep up his play of late. Moreover, with the departure of Malcolm Subban to Vegas, the bruins lack a solid goal tending prospect in their system. Perhaps that is what they look for if they do trade Rask, but who knows.
