BREAKING: Islanders sign defenseman to 5-year contract extension

Less than a day after Vegas signs Jonathan Marchessault to a 6-year extension, the Islanders make a decent sized signing of their own.
The Islanders agree to terms on a 5-year, 7.25 million dollar extension with defenseman Scott Mayfield. This has an annual cap hit of 1.45 million dollars.

Mayfield can fill a bottom-3 role nicely on most teams, and the cap hit is very manageable even though the term seems quite long.

Selected 34th overall in  2011, the 25-year old has spent his entire professional career with the Islanders organization. With 20 points in 65 games in his NHL career, he certainly is a nice depth piece to aid a playoff run.
