Leafs Prospect Earns His Shot In The Bigs & Is Moving Up The Depth Chart Already

After sensational play with the AHL Toronto Marlies, Defensemen Travis Dermott has earned his shot in "The Show" and has already raised the eyebrows of head Coach Mike Babcock, who has moved him up the depth chart.

Following what can only be described as a successful NHL debut game against the Vancouver Canucks, where he recorded his first ever NHL point on the game timing goal by Tyler Bozak, Travis Dermott has been moved up to the Second Defensive pairing alongside Jake Gardiner.

In just 12:03 minutes of ice time, the 21 year old was very noticeable. He was able to break out of his own zone with his smooth skating and puck moving abilities on several occasions, delivered 2 very solid body checks, recorded his first ever NHL point and finished with a plus 1 rating.

Following the game, Mike Babcock liked what saw, thus the experimental Gard-Mott pairing tonight. This will be heavier lifting for Dermott, playing against more skilled forward groups and playing alongside the often struggling and mistake prone Jake Gardiner.

Tonight's defensive pairs against the Columbus Blue Jackets look to be as follows:

Diehard Leafs fans are not surprised at Dermott's solid first impression. He comes as advertised. Here are the kid's career stats thus far.

It has always been a safe bet that Dermott would eventually make his way to the Leafs top 4, but I'm sure even he is a little surprised at this "Sink or Swim" move by the head coach.

On that note Leafs fans, I say to you:

"Gard-Mott what your team can do for you, but what you can do for your team."

I'm interested to hear the opinions of hockey fans on Dermott, both Leafs fans and others alike.

Is this too much too soon for a young player? What should we realistically expect? Are the answers to the Leafs defensive woes already within their own system? Are crazy Leafs fans ready to anoint another rookie savior after just one decent game?

Lets here what you think!

I love this game!
