BREAKING: The Canadiens and Flames Exchange Former 1st Round Picks
The Canadiens and Flames have made a trade, with a pair of former 1st round picks being exchanged.
The Flames acquire F Kerby Rychel from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for F Hunter Shinkaruk.
Both players are 2013 1st round picks, Rychel going 19th overall and Shinkaruk going 24th. Both players are also still RFAs and not waivers-exempt.
Rumors have it that Shinkaruk was looking to head to Europe next season, so Calgary was smart to trade him away. He was acquired by the Flames in exchange for Markus Granlund in 2016. He has scored 2 goals and 4 points in 15 career NHL games.
Rychel was acquired by Montreal along with Rinat Valiev and a 2nd round pick in exchange for Tomas Plekanec and Kyle Baun around the trade deadline this year. He has played in 41 NHL games, scoring 3 goals and 14 points.
