John Tavares hoping for positive reception from Islanders fans when Maple Leafs visit to play against them
Toronto Maple Leafs' John Tavares will return to play his former team the New York Islanders on February 28, 2019. Tavares is hoping for a positive reception from Islanders fans, even though he abruptly bailed on the team in free agency. In an interview with NHL, Tavares made arrogant comments about the Islanders situation.
I hope the reception is positive from the fans. They all had a positive impact on me. I knew not everyone would love my choice but I had to make the decision that was best for me.
The Islanders and that community played a significant role in turning me into the man I am today. I had a lot of fun there and was treated very well over the years and will always appreciate that support. I wish we would have had more success and will always ask myself what I could have done to bring more to that franchise.
The last part is a bit arrogant because if Tavares truly cared about the Islanders success, he could have signed another contract with them. What do you think about Tavares' comments? Should Islanders give their former captain a standing ovation when he returns? Or should they boo Tavares loudly? Comment below.
