Report: Mitch Marner may hold out on contract extension
According to Sportsnet's Chris Johnston and Nick Kypreos, Mitch Marner might hold out if the Toronto Maple Leafs don't offer what he wants.
During his season-ending press conference, Maple Leafs Kyle Dubas noted that it was the Leafs number one priority to re-sign restricted free agent Mitch Marner before July 1st, when the 21-year old could sign an offer sheet with a rival club. Dubas also added that he would not like a repeat of what happened last year with William Nylander.
Johnston stated that there are two comparables on what Marner's next contract may be. One being the players on the Leafs' roster. Tavares ($11 million, seven years), Matthews ($11.6 million, five years), and the second being those of wingers on other teams. Patrick Kane ($10.5 million, eight years) and Nikita Kucherov ($9.5 million, eight years).
Kypreos believes that Marner's next contract should come resemble Matthews contract, and if it doesn't, Kypreos believes Marner will hold out until either he is signed to that sort of contract, or another team will give him an offer sheet.
Elliotte Friedman chipped in and said to not rule out a trade if a contract agreement isn't reached by July 1st.
What do you think the terms and conditions of Marner's contract will be?
