NHL Trade Rumor: Wild trade RHD Jared Spurgeon; 3 Possible Destinations
On this week's 31 Thoughts Podcast, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman mentioned he felt the Minnesota Wild could be active this offseason and he felt their best asset in play would be RHD Jared Spurgeon.
Spurgeon enjoyed himself a stellar campaign, tallying carry highs in goals and assists, ending the year with 43 points and a plus 20. Spurgeon doesn't play a heavy game, but he's as crafty as they come and would fit on any team's power-play units. Right handed defencemen come at a premium in the league, so it makes sense the Wild could be interested in moving Spurgeon as teams will over pay and they need help up front. Here's a few teams that will definitely kick tires on the offensive-defencemen:
- Tampa Bay Lightning - with Anton Stralman, Braydon Coburn, and Dan Girardi all free agents, the Bolts will be looking to add a D-Man, who can move the puck. Names like Killorn or Palat could be asked to move their no trade to make this happen.
- Montreal Canadiens - the Habs could desperately use a puck moving defenceman, and have enough young talent up front to make this deal work. With almost 10 million in cap space, Spurgeon could be a perfect option to pencil in their lineup.
- Toronto Maple Leafs - with Jake Gardiner on his way out, and Travis Dermott out until potentially Christmas, the Leafs are in desperate need of D-Men would can move the puck. Perhaps Andreas Johnsson gets this deal done and is enough production for the Wild to consider. Spurgeon is only under contract for next season so an extension will be on the minds of Kyle Dubas and company.
The Minnesota Wild will be busy this offseason as they find themselves in the middle of the Western Conference pack. The best insider in the NHL feels the team will explore trading Jared Spurgeon for some help with their forward core. Where do you think Spurgeon lands?
