Rumor: Maple Leafs To Sign IIya Kovalchuk

After trying to sign the Russian star in 2017, the Leafs are circling back for a second crack at one of the greatest Russians ever to play the game.

The fact that this rumour is out there just hours after the Leafs lost LW IIya Mikheyev to a serious wrist injury doesn't surprise me at all.

The only stumbling block would likely be salary. Would Kovalchuk be willing to accept a league min type contract to play with the likes of Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Nylander, Barrie & Rielly. Well, there is only one person who can answer that question. With his 6.25 million dollar salary from the LA Kings still on the books in LA, perhaps the opportunity to win with the Leafs young core might lure Kovy over?

I for one, would love to see what an elite shooter like Kovalchuk could do flanking either Matthews or Tavares.

Things did not work out in LA, but make no mistake, this player has plenty left in the tank
