UPDATE: Team Canada Player Suspended
The IIHF disciplinary committee has been reviewing an incident that occurred between Team Canada and Team Russia during yesterday's contest.
Update: Joe Veleno has been suspended and will be ineligible to play in Monday's contest against Germany. He will become eligible to play on December 31st, 2019, against Czech Republic.
Detroit Red Wings' prospect, Joe Veleno, was exchanging words with Russian counterpart, Daniil Misyul, when he decided to escalate his frustrations. Veleno is said to have 'headbutted' Misyul during the exchange, and his conduct is now under review by the IIHF disciplinary committee. With Lafreniere already ruled out of Monday's game against Germany, Canada may find themselves in a tight spot.
Some chatter in Ostrava that the #WorldJuniors disciplinary committee has been reviewing Team Canada’s Joe Veleno for a headbutt in Saturday’s loss to Russia. Suspension possible.— Frank Seravalli (@frank_seravalli) December 29, 2019
If Joe Veleno's conduct is under review, then we should also call into question the conduct of Russian player Nikita Rtishchev. In today's contest between the United States and Russia, Rtishchev delivered a headbutt to New York Islanders' prospect, Oliver Wahlstrom. Neither of these incidents resulted with an injury, but the IIHF must be consistent in their disciplinary action.
