BREAKING: Washington Capitals Sign Nicklas Backstrom to a Five Year Extension
The Caps are holding on to their star centre, Nicklas Backstrom.
The Washington Capitals have agreed to terms on a five year, 46 million dollar extension with centre Nicklas Backstrom. This carries a cap hit of 9.2 million dollars.
The 32-year old Swedish centre was selected 4th overall at the 2006 draft, and has been Alex Ovechkin's partner in crime for the majority of his career.
In 934 regular season games, Backstrom has scored 240 goals and 908 points. In 123 playoff games, he has amassed 36 goals and 106 points.
It is certainly a steep bill to pay, especially considering Backstrom's age, but many fans would agree that this is a dutiful signing Washington had to make for a player that has given everything to the organisation for the past 13 years.
