Rumor: Jimmy Howard to Columbus Blue Jackets

Jimmy Howard has spent his entire career as a member of the Detroit Red Wings. He was selected 64th overall in 2003 NHL draft.. His popularity in Hockeytown has dwindled in recent years as the team has struggled, but it would be unfair to place all of the onus on the former NHL All-Star goaltender.

Howard's 1 year / $4 million contact is set to expire on July 1st and the Red Wings are near mathematical elimination from the playoffs. The Columbus Blue Jackets have recently lost their starting goaltender, Joonas Korpisalo, for 4-6 weeks due to injury. Additionally, they currently have $4,926,066 available in salary cap space. Jimmy Howard is a great candidate to alleviate their current netminding issues, and will serve to be a great veteran back-up as the Blue Jackets seek to make another playoff appearance. This is a low risk deal for the Blue Jackets who a desperate for a high reward trade to upgrade their goaltender during this unstable period.
