Rumor: Kings and Flyers discussing an interesting trade
The LA Kings sent long-time defenseman, Alec Martinez packing on Wednesday in another move showcasing their focus on the future. It appears the Kings could have another move in site, as the team is rumored to be discussing a trade with the Philadelphia Flyers.
The chatter appears to be focused around ex-Flyer Jeff Carter. With 17 goals on the season, a wealth of playoff experience, proven winner and someone accustomed to spring time hockey in Philly, a reunion makes sense.
The believe is the Kings are trying to ensure any Carter trade is a good situation for the player and his family, and sometimes we need to remind ourselves of the human aspect of the game, especially around these times. Kings GM, Rob Blake has mentioned the team is willing to make some moves for players not named Anze or Drew. Getting Carter off the books would bode well for the Kings as the team has an easy sell job to free agents, and could easily find a player to spend the extra money on.
With the Martinez deal, and Kyle Clifford and Jack Campbell already of town, the makeover in LA could be substantial. The team could surprise with how fast their turnaround back to success may take.
Regarding the Carter trade, the Flyers will only be interested in a Carter reunion if the Kings eat some of the 2-years remaining at $5.2 million. With Carter's recent production at a cap hit like so, some would argue he's overpaid, but if you take the player at a number around $3.2, then it becomes more likely.
The next 5 days are going to be interesting as NHL executives wear out their thumbs texting and their minds, contemplating offers. For the Kings and Flyers you have two teams who couldn't be more different, yet
