If the Oilers traded Connor McDavid, these 5 trades could work
Let's make no bones about it, the NHL being suspended and living a life with no hockey is driving me crazy. From pondering what the playoff format will look like, to coming to terms with a cancelled season, the emotions of a hockey fan right now are all over the map. Today, I woke up thinking, if Edmonton HAD to trade Connor McDavid, perhaps he asked them to, where would he go and what would the trade look like. Let's have some fun here, god knows you could probably use it.
Regardless of what I construct, the majority of you will dangle through the comments section and tell me to pound salt. I could literally put 'trade him for Wayne Gretzky in is prime' and some of you would be like - 'no, that's dumb.'
That's OK, this is just for fun. Connor McDavid isn't getting trade today, so, relax, and enjoy some material about hockey. Let's assume the Oilers are only looking for a 'hockey trade' and not a package full of future considerations.
If the Edmonton Oilers had to trade Connor McDavid, they should deal him to:
1. Florida Panthers for Aleksander Barkov, Aaron Ekblad and prospect Owen Tippett. This deal works financially. It gives the Oilers some major pieces in return, and it provides the Panthers the polarizing superstar the city so desperately needs, so maybe they can sell a few tickets?
2. Boston Bruins for David Pastrnak and Brandon Carlo. This deal gives Leon Draisaitl a STUD for his RW, and gives the Oil a RHD with massive potential. It also gives the Oilers roughly $5 million in cap space. For the Bruins, McDavid and Bergeron down the middle for the next few years is as scary as it gets.
3. Philadelphia Flyers for Carter Hart, Travis Konency and Ivan Provorov. An interesting deal to say the least, which gives the Oilers a core piece for each area of their game. Finding a goalie for the future and a defenseman for the future is tough as hell in this league, and the Oilers could do it with one trade. Having Leon in their back pocket on a 'value' contract and adding these pieces makes Oil fans wonder....
4. New York Rangers for Jacob Trouba, Kaapo Kakko, and Igor Shesterkin. Kakko is a wildcard, meanwhile, the other two are pillars for the future. The Rangers add McDavid to a loaded top-6 and still have Alex Georgiev to build around in their crease. Intriguing...
5. Toronto Maple Leafs for Mitch Marner, Ilya Mikheyev and Travis Dermott. Marner fills some of the offensive load left by McDavid leaving, meanwhile, the team gets another top-6 capable forward and a top-4 defenseman. The Leafs would have 3 of the best centers in the game, and a Power-Play that would frighten teams. McDavid would love this trade...
Well, that was fun. 5 teams in the eastern conference to help the Oilers get McDavid as far away from them as possible. Returns that all provide the Oilers a future with Leon leading the charge, and changes of scenery where McDavid would shine in his new threads.
Connor McDavid isn't the best player in the world, because he's not even the best player on his team. Maybe the Oilers should deal him?
Hockey, I miss you. Come back soon before I lose the other half of my mind.
