If the Stanley Cup Playoffs happen this year, could we see the best playoff ever?
Despite this season’s turbulence due to the outbreak of COVID-19, if the league is able to safely resume the season and deliver the fans a playoff tournament, it could be one of the best of all time. Given the season’s delay, most teams will have the opportunity to recuperate their injured stars, giving injury-battered teams the chance to compete at their highest level. Calgary Flames captain Mark Giordano weighed in earlier today.
“If we ever get back to playing, I think this could be one of the best playoffs ever”
The timing of a presumed resumption could have massive implications for certain playoff eligible teams. Giordano’s Flames have fortunately remained fairly healthy through the 2019/20 campaign, but will need every player healthy to compete with their likely first round opponent, the Edmonton Oilers. In response to Giordano's comments, Oilers captain Connor McDavid expressed concerns about jumping right in.
"I don't think we can just step into playoffs, Game 1, Calgary coming to Edmonton and guys are running around trying to kill each other..."
No matter how the league decides to continue the season, the best case scenario is one where players and team staff are healthy and the world is safe and ready to hopefully see a "Battle of Alberta" in the playoffs.
