Trade Bait: If the Devils dealt PK Subban, 3 potential destinations
Today we're here to sanitize the trade world by reviewing our newest member of 'Trade Bait' - PK Subban. The New Jersey Devils' defenseman was brought into Newark to provide offense from the back end, and mentor the young flux of talent. The mentoring appears to be going fine, but the results on the ice are questionable, which is why the Devils may look to moving Subban in off season.
The Toronto, ON native has only managed 18 points in 68 games this season. The entire Devils team has struggled and PK has been front and center. If the team is going to move him and his $9 million dollar contract for the next 2 seasons, they will have to eat some money. Let's stay they eat $2 million for arguments sake.
IF the Devils traded PK Subban, here's a few potential deals worth considering:
To the Columbus Blue Jackets for D David Savard and a 2nd round pick. This deal helps the Devils cut their losses with Subban and brings in a capable RHD to eat up some minutes. Savard isn't flashy but he's capable and cheaper. The 2nd round pick is thrown in, almost as a thank you to New Jersey for eating salary. The Blue Jackets would be hoping Subban is able to return to his play-making ways and pairing him with Torts, may be the spark he needs. Even if the Devils ate $2 million, they would still be saving almost $3 million dollars with this deal, and has their team really gotten worse?
To the Calgary Flames for Sam Bennett and a 2nd round pick. The Flames are going to have a huge hole on defense next season as TJ Brodie, Travis Hamonic, Derek Forbort and Erik Gustafsson are all free agents. Their money could be used to cover Subban's $7 million, while the Devils cover the other $2 million and receive a forward with a ton of potential and another pick to their cupboard of future considerations. Subban could help reignite the offense in Calgary and along with Mark Giordano, Noah Hanifin and Rasmus Andersson, provide the Flames with a solid top-4 for the next few years.
Meanwhile, the Devils would hope Bennett can turn into the shut down centre their team will desperately need behind Hughes and Hischier down the middle. Keep an eye out on these two teams, they will be linked once trade season is back underway.
To the Toronto Maple Leafs for Alexander Kerfoot and Martin Marincin. The Leafs and Subban have been linked for awhile but there's no evidence that Kyle Dubas feels Subban would be a fit on his team. Cheaper on the dollar, or not. However, the Leafs will be in desperate need for a RHD come next season as Tyson Barrie and Cody Ceci are free agents. If Barrie doesn't re-sign in Toronto, look for the Leafs to explore this option.
The Devils biggest piece in return is Kerfoot, who can provide speed and versatility up front, while also saving the Devils a ton of money moving forward.
Decisions, decisions, the only question now is - when exactly will GM's have to start making some?
That about does it for another episode of Trade Bait. Thanks for stopping by.
Be safe and stay home.
