Report: NHL could condense playoffs, prioritizing regular-season games

According to Pierre LeBrun of the Athletic, the NHL's 'preference and it's priority' is to complete the regular season in its entirety before any postseason games would be played.

LeBrun went on to mention 'whether that's 82, probably not, 78, 76,74, all possibilities mentioned on that call' referring to the NHL's latest conference call with the Board of Governors. Some teams have already completed 71 games of their expected 82 this season while other teams have only finished up 68.

It's been mentioned across the league by some of the league's biggest stars that playing some regular season games before jumping into the playoffs is the preference. As much as fans want the Oilers and Flames to go into a potential 7-game battle right out of the gate, it's smart for the health of all the players involved to be given some time to get their legs back.

Also to consider is Darren Dreger's comments, as he polled 24 general managers and 20 supported the idea of a best of 5 in every round expect for the Stanley Cup Finals.
