Trade Bait: If the Maple Leafs traded Mitch Marner, 3 deals to consider
Welcome to another edition of Trade Bait, where we showcase players across the league and argue over some potential trades. Today it's Mitchell 'Merlot' Marner.
While Mitch Marner has been busy chugging wine and playing video games during the 'pandemic pause' the reality is, his Toronto Maple Leafs may have some serious cap issues next season if the salary cap does not go up. With that being said, it's unlikely the Leafs would ever move Marner, but everyone has a price, so why not jump into some potential deals which include Marner's name.
It's worthy to note, the Leafs wouldn't give Marner a No-Movement Clause in his extension, so as Lloyd Christmas once said, 'so you're telling me there's a chance?'.
To the Vegas Golden Knights for Shea Theodore a 1st and a 2nd round pick in 2021.
Any deal sending Marner out of Toronto will have Leafs Nation up in arms, so regardless of the return, there will be no pleasing the fan base and that's ok. This deal gives the Leafs another stud-defenseman and picks to either parlay into another mega-deal or to select players and add cheap roster options for the following season. Marner in Vegas would be fun to watch. Also, Shea Theodore may be the most underrated d-man in the game.
To the Nashville Predators for Ryan Ellis, prospect Philip Tomasino and a 1st round pick.
Ellis is signed long term at $6.25 per season and would give the perfect compliment for Morgan Rielly. Of course, he can't replace Marner's production on the wing, but the Leafs defense would be vastly improved with Ellis in the fold. Tomasino is a former 1st-round pick and had over 100 points this season in the OHL. The Leafs would save money, add a stud RHD and add a couple of assets for the future. Preds' GM, David Poile loves making bold moves and this would be near the top of the list. Marner would give the Preds a scary top-6 and the speedster would flourish with Matt Duchene's wheels.
Thoughts, Mr Dubas?

To the Dallas Stars for John Klinberg, Roope Hintz and a 2nd round pick.
Notice a trend? All of these deals include west coast teams and a right-handed defenseman coming the other way. The Leafs have a massive hole on their right side of their D, and if any of the big names up-front get moved, a RHD will be coming the other way. This deal gives the Leafs roughly $4 million in cap space and Roope Hintz is still really young with 30-goal potential. Klinberg jumps in immediately to the top pair, and the 2nd round pick is essentially a throw in. Marner alongside Benn and Seguin would be up there for the most entertaining line in hockey.
Mitch Marner would prefer to spend his entire career in Toronto and if you asked Kyle Dubas today, he would tell you Marner isn't going anywhere. IF the Leafs were to move Marner, would these deals be enough for Leafs Nation? Or, are the so-called Dumb just getting Dumber.

And no, I don' think the Leafs are trading Mitch Marner. Stay safe, stay home.
