NHL Draft to be held online this year
The NHL draft was scheduled to be held in Montreal on June 26 and 27, as reported by Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman on Wednesday that will no longer be the case. Friedman confirmed with the NHL Network that this years draft will be held online, similar to how the NFL conducted their draft last month.
The NFL drew rave reviews from fans and press about how unique the online draft was and it turned out to be a huge success. The NHL has said the league wants to make this up to Montreal and their fans by giving them next years draft or possibly the year after. The reason it may not be next year is that the NHL was maybe planning on having Seattle host the event to help build anticipation for the expansion team, due to begin play in 2021-2022.
This years draft will certainly be a different experience than normal, but this may be the best way moving forward. The draft lotto would also revert to just one winner and that winner only being able to move up 4 spots in the draft. This would ensure that the Detroit Red Wings will be picking in the top 2.
