Rumor: Huge trade coming out of Pittsburgh

When the GM of the team mentions there are 'tough decisions ahead' with his goaltenders, you have to think one of either Tristan Jarry or Matt Murray are getting traded out of Pittsburgh.

Pens GM, Jim Rutherford spoke with The Athletic and had this to say about the crowded crease in Pittsburgh:
We may have to trade one of our goalies. I will say this, if we are going to keep both of them, we'd have to move a few things around on our team. There is a way to do things and to make that work, yes. There are some very, very touch decisions ahead
With the salary cap hovering around $81.5 million and with the Pens already having committed $68 million next season, it will be very tough to keep the team under the cap with both goalies locked up long term. Murray's current deal pays him $3.75 million while Jarry is $675,000. The Pens also have Casey DeSmith under contract for the next two seasons at $1.25 million.

In all liklihood, Murray will be the goalie traded, even though he's a proven winner. His upcoming salary is likely too rich for the Pens blood, especially with cheaper capable options in the fold.

Teams to consider for Murray's services include the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Chicago Blackhawks, Buffalo Sabres, and Vancouver Canucks. Each of these teams could have a huge hole to fill in net, and Murray would be an upgrade to most of these clubs.

The Pens would be interested in young NHL ready wingers, and a mobile defenseman in the deal. Murray is still only 25, a Cup champion and has a tremendous amount of upside. The trade could work itself into a blockbuster should other pieces be made available.

To note, the Pens don't have a 1st or 2nd round pick in this upcoming draft, so if a player is on the board they are interested in, Murray could be used on draft day to secure a top pick.

Decisions decisions for Jim Rutherford and the Pens. We all know his track record, he's not shy to pull the trigger. Expect to hear some noise out of Pittsburgh soon.
