Rumor: Torey Krug is done in Boston

Boston Bruins insider, Joe Haggerty is ruffling some feathers in Bean Town lately with a proposed blockbuster trade for Sabres' Jack Eichel, and now Haggerty is making it known, defenseman Torey Krug is likely not being re-signed, and to be honest, it does make a bit of sense.

Krug, 29, making $5.25 million, is coming up to unrestricted free-agency and given the unknown regarding the salary cap figures over the next few years, it's highly unlikely Boston will be offering a mega-deal of roughly $8 million per year.  Given Krug's production over the past few seasons, his agent will be looking for at least a 5-year-deal at over $8 million per season.

With Brandon Carlo and Charlie McAvoy to build their defense around, giving Krug a huge deal may not be in the cards financially. With that being said, the left-side of the Bruins defense without Krug and potentially the retirement of Zdeno Chara, this gaping hole should be worrisome for Bruins fans.

Here's more from Bruins insider Joe Haggerty on Krug's future:
There was a time when Krug and the Bruins might have been able to make a deal based on the salary cap space that Boston cleared by ridding themselves of the David Backes contract, and based on the salary cap going up from the $81.5 million salary cap ceiling this past season. It’s a tough spot for both player and the hockey club because of the financial uncertainty. It’s more likely now that Krug is going to sign for as much money as he can get now given the uncharted waters ahead. Krug would have been able to command an annual salary in the $8 million AAV range based on his offensive production over the last handful of seasons, something few of his peers can boast.
