3 potential destinations for free-agent-to-be Braden Holtby

Braden Holtby enters the playoff tournament with a ton of questions surrounding his future in Washington. The Capitals veteran tender has been everything as advertised since arriving in Washington, which includes a Stanley Cup ring. Even the year the Caps won the Cup, Holtby wasn't the initial starter for Washington, nothing has come easy. With Ilya Samsonov battling injuries, Holtby will be given the keys for this year's playoff run. After that, is anyone's guess.

If Holtby doesn't re-up in Washington, here's a few teams that will be ready and waiting with open arms:

Edmonton Oilers: It may take a buy-out of Mikko Koskinen or Kris Russell to make this happen, but as it stands right now, the Oilers could fit this move under the cap. Moving Koskinen just makes it easier to upgrade up front and in the crease for Ken Holland and the Oil. A team on the brink of breaking out, adding a Stanley Cup winner would be music to the ears of Connor McDavid. Doesn't hurt Holtby is from western Canada.

Calgary Flames:
David Rittich is still under contract next year, but if Calgary doesn't have any postseason success, this team will look vastly different next season. With hardly anyone signed on defense for next year, the team may focus on finding capable d-men first and foremost. What better defense then a stellar tendy night in and night out? Keep an eye on the Flames to make some major moves this off season and adding Holtby could be a nice piece for their club.

Carolina Hurricanes: With both James Reimer and Petr Mrazek both under contract next season this may surprise you, however, Holtby would be a massive upgrade. With teams like Detroit, Ottawa, Vancouver, Pittsburgh and San Jose all in the market next year for backups, moving Reimer or Mrazek may be easier than expected. The Hurricanes are a team to watch at the draft, as if they move one of their goalies, expect them to be in on Holtby. They have a solid team and a ton of depth, a Stanley Cup winner would be a great addition to the fold.

With Ilya Samsonov the goaltender of the future, it's unlikely the Caps bring Holtby back long-term. A short termed extension is possible, especially if the Capitals are a force again these playoffs. It's going to be fun to watch how this all plays out. One save at a time.
