Rumor: Buffalo Sabres preparing massive trade package for the draft
The Buffalo Sabres have been all over the news in 2020. From getting off to a great start and then falling flat on their faces, to firing 22 employees, including the wrong guy, to have to hire him back, it's not an understatement to say it's been a touch embarrassing. Star captain, Jack Eichel voiced his displeasure about all the losing seasons, and now it's up to new GM, Kevyn Adams to make Eichel want to stay. Well it turns out his first move could be his biggest.
According to the Athletic's John Vogl, the Sabres may be open to moving the #8 overall pick for a NHL top-6 forward who can come in and help Eichel put the puck in the back of the net. The team doesn't want to wait out the development it would normally take a #8 overall pick, and wants immediate results. Vogl calls this the 'biggest thing to watch for' when it comes to the Sabres operations.
With a massive amount of cap space for next season, and several teams who will be pushing the cap, the Sabres should receive a ton of calls on the pick. If they can parlay the pick into a quality piece and sign a couple of free agents, the team can be turned around quicker than you think.
Look for the Sabres to see if Brock Boeser is actually available in Vancouver, as the Canucks need some cap relief. Another team to consider is the Flyers and the likes of Jakub Voracek or JVR.
Cap relief is as valuable as ever in the NHL as the salary cap isn't going up anytime soon. The Sabres have a massive carrot to dangle in front of teams looking for some help on their books, a high-end prospect who will be on the cheap for at least 3 seasons.
Somebody is going to overpay, which is music to the ears of Sabres fans. Let's just hope everything works out, because if Eichel ends up demanding a trade, it could get really ugly in Buffalo.
