Blockbuster Rumor: Pittsburgh and Toronto expected to pull off massive trade
According to hockey insider Nick Kypreos, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Pittsburgh Penguins could be exploring a huge trade this off season centered around Freddie Andersen and Matt Murray.
With both goalies needing a change of scenery and the two teams having a history of transactions together, this could be a match made in hockey media heaven. Don't forget Sheldon Keefe coached Murray for 2 years in junior and Dubas is also from the same junior program in Sault St Marie, ON. If you think that doesn't matter, look at Dubas' last trade with the Kings. Jack Campbell was someone who Dubas traded for in the OHL and brought to Sault St Marie, and Kyle Clifford's first agent was....Kyle Dubas.
For Andersen, it was another disappointing finish to a solid season, as untimely weak goals and a horrible record in elimination games is being questioned by Leafs Nation. While no one can put the blame on Freddie for the Leafs not scoring any goals in game 5, the 2-0 goal from a bad angle was so disheartening to the club, some feel that was the deciding moment of the game.
The Maple Leafs haven't won a playoff series in 15 years, so there's no doubt changes are coming this off season. Murray is 4 years younger than Andersen and has two Cups under his belt. His current contract is cheaper as well, however, he is an upcoming restricted free-agent and will be looking for something north of Andersen's deal at $5 million.
While the Leafs are desperate for help on defense, the last line of defense is also an area of focus for the club and a deal with Pittsburgh could be the beginning of a major overhaul. Andersen, Nylander, Johnsson, Kerfoot, the list goes on.
Without a doubt, interesting times in Leafs Nation...Nick Kypreos hearing rumours Leafs and penguins flipping goalies Anderson for Matt Murray it makes some sense, both may need a change of scenery.
