Details revealed about why Capitals' Ilya Samsonov isn't playing
The Washington Capitals turned to goaltender Braden Holtby in a surprise move before the NHL round-robin playoffs began and many questioned the decision. Turns out Ilya Samsonov is injured and the story behind it is crazy.
According to a Russian newspaper, shortly before the NHL restart, Samsonov was back in his homeland of Russia, and was riding an ATV, when he fell off at high speed. What could have been a deadly accident, Samsonov seriously injured his back and neck.
While he's expected to be ready for next season, the injuries are serious enough for Washington to be extremely worried about his long-term health. The Capitals are not happy with Samsonov's decision making prior to a playoff run. There's a very good chance the team considers signing Braden Holtby to a short-term extension to cover at least next season.
We wish Ilya nothing but the best with his recovery.
