Hockey insider suggests Maple Leafs trading Mitch Marner
According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, the Toronto Maple Leafs could be moving on from Mitch Marner. During Writers Bloc Friedman hinted the Leafs could use Marner to shore up their defense, which was exposed during their series vs Columbus.
Marner is a fan favorite, so moving Mitch would be a huge blow to Leafs Nation, however, in order to get substance you need to give substance. The Leafs are in trouble with a flat salary cap, so getting Marner's $10.9 million off the books would be huge for the club.
Sure, they will take some salary coming back the other way, but regardless, the team could set themselves up better financially and acquire a stud defenseman in a Marner deal. Friedman went on to mention the team could even be open to including a draft pick to secure a defenseman of the future.
The Toronto Star's Dave Feschuk also chimed in a Marner deal:
If general manager Kyle Dubas is going to do something about the defensive corps that's clearly lacking, moving Marner's $10.9 million cap hit would go some distance providing the headroom to add quality blue-line help.
My take: Give Marner, Matthews, Reilly, Andersen, and Tavares another year together and trade anyone else for a RHD. Start with Nylander, not Marner.
