Report: Joe Thornton could be on his way to Switzerland

'Jumbo' Joe Thornton has enjoyed himself a hall-of-fame career. From highly touted prospect to traded superstar, wherever Joe Thornton has laced them up, he's produced. His talents could be on the move. According to Elliotte Friedman on the latest episode of '31 Thoughts' podcast, Thornton's career could take him back overseas.

Friedman also reports Joe Thornton may play in Switzerland, where he goes every August, and be ready to play, in better shape even, for the 2021 season, whenever that starts. The NHL will allow players to sign overseas with an out clause for when the season begins.

Makes a ton of sense for Joe Thornton to stay in game shape. Take advantage of the opportunity if you can. It is however, a touch surprising more NHLers haven't signed over seas,

For Thornton it will be familiar territory. Remind yourself Thornton played in Switzerland with Rick Nash during an NHL lockout and as he vacations there on a regular basis, I can only imagine it's quite the set-up.

It's going to be interesting to see when Thornton comes back, where he ends up. In the back-nine of his career, if a Stanley Cup is top of mind, he may have to change his course.
