Rumor: New Jersey and Toronto discussing trade
The trade market is heating up and the rumors are continuing to fly across the NHL. The latest rumor out of New Jersey is the team has contacted the Toronto Maple Leafs regarding a deal centered around William Nylander and PK Subban.
The deal would see PK Subban and a high draft pick be sent to the Maple Leafs for forward William Nylander. The Devils would retain salary in the deal, which is likely to be north of $2 million dollars.
While Kyle Dubas has since back tracked on his statement that he wouldn't trade Nylander from when he signed his latest contract, it's believed Dubas is only open to moving Nylander for 'exactly what the team needs' according to TSN's Darren Dreger. While the Leafs could certainly use a defenseman like Subban, he may not be the 'perfect' fit because of his playing style.
Nylander, on the other hand, would fit nicely with the rebuilding Devils and his contract is becoming quite the steal considering he's capable of producing 70-point seasons making less than $7 million. It also doesn't hurt his deal was front-loaded and the Leafs have already forked over millions.
We caught up with an employee of the Toronto Maple Leafs and asked about the rumored deal:
Nothing on the front-burner yet, but the phone has been ringing off the hook. A lot of conversations with a variety of teams and the Devils are certainly one of them. Kyle is going to take his time.
