Capitals GM provides update on possible Braden Holtby extension
The news we have been reporting for weeks, Braden Holtby is done in Washington.
Capitals GM Brian MacLellan was busy today, naming a new coach in Peter Laviolette, and he also happened to touch on his goaltending situation for next season and beyond. MacLellan was honest and admitted, having Holtby return just isn't in the cards for Washington, given their cap situation and youngster Ilya Samsonov's abilities to be the starter.
Holtby is going to be a hot commodity on the free-agent market. Teams who will be interested in the Stanley Cup champion include the Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames, Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators, Colorado Avalanche, Buffalo Sabres, San Jose Sharks and the Carolina Hurricanes.
Needless to say, Holtby's getting paid!
Capitals GM Brian MacLellan says he expects Braden Holtby to go to free agency. Given Washington's cap situation, not really a surprise.
