Done Deal: Marc Staal traded to the Detroit Red Wings
The salary dump deal also includes a 2nd-round pick heading to the Red Wings and frees up roughly $6 million in cap space for the Rangers.
The Rangers plan on using the cap space to shore up a contract extension with Anthony Deangelo.
The #NYR send Marc Staal and a 2021 second-round draft pick to Detroit for future considerations. The deal shaves $5.7M in cap space for New York.

For the Wings, the trade makes a ton of sense. They have cap space to use, and gain a 2nd-round pick in the deal. They can also turn around and trade Staal at the trade deadline and acquire more assets as they continue to build their new core.
Smart trade for both clubs!
