Rumor: Toronto rejects latest offer from Pittsburgh
The Toronto Maple Leafs and the Pittsburgh Penguins have agreed to several trades over the past few seasons but it appears, their current talks are not going as smooth as planned.
During the Kasperi Kapanen trade, Matt Murray's name was brought up and both teams agreed to put him on the back burner 'for now'. Leafs GM, Kyle Dubas knows Murray from their time in the OHL together and would love to have him as his team's last line of defense.
The Leafs are seeing what a Freddie Andersen market looks like right now and don't want to acquire a new goaltender until Andersen is moved. Makes sense, if they acquire one before a deal for Andersen, they basically give up all their negotiating leverage on Andersen's worth.
Pittsburgh has recently tried to obtain a 1st round pick for Murray from the Edmonton Oilers but the Oilers said no, and it appears Jim Rutherford has now asked for their 1st round pick back from Toronto in any deal for Matt Murray.
It would be quite bizarre for the Leafs to turn around and hand back the #15 overall pick to Pittsburgh after they basically stole it for a 3rd-line winger who scored 13 goals last season.
Talks continue for the Pens and Leafs, but not necessarily together. Both teams are expected to make some major moves between now and the middle of October.
