Surprise team emerges for free-agent Alex Pietrangelo!

The Alex Pietrangelo sweepstakes may not ever materialize as the St Louis Blues continue to speak with their captain's representatives, however, in some developing news it appears one team is trying to clear enough cap room to make a serious offer.

Insert Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

GM, Jim Rutherford has mentioned he feels this team has about 3 years left to win cups and then their run of supremacy will be over due to the age of their superstars. While father time battles it out with the Crosby and Malkin's of the world, Rutherford is trying to pull off a few more trades to free up some money.

The Pens have mentioned Kris Letang's name to a number of teams and are gauging the market to see what the return may look like if they pulled the trigger on a deal. If you ask Letang, he thinks he's getting traded. If Rutherford is able to free up Letang's $7.25 million dollar contract for the next two seasons, the Pens are willing to make a serious push in signing Pietrangelo.

While returning to St Louis is priority #1 for the Blues captain, as his family including his triplets, wife and her entire family all reside in the area, if Pietrangelo was to move on, it's expected a 3-5 year deal would be something he would be interested in. It's not going to come down to the money, it's going to come down to the chances of winning multiple Stanley Cups in a short period of time.

There's a very good chance Alex Pietrangelo finishes his career as a St Louis Blue. There's also a good chance he has a pit stop in another city along the way, and right now, Pittsburgh has emerged as the potential fit.
