Here comes another trade from the Pittsburgh Penguins!
The Pittsburgh Penguins are not done, not even close. The team continues to make changes this off season, starting with adding Kasperi Kapanen, dealing Patric Hornqvist for Michael Matheson and Colton Sceviour, and now one of their goalies will be shipped out of town. Or, perhaps they can both stay? Pens GM, Jim Rutherford says absolutely not!
Rutherford spoke with Josh Yohe of the Athletic and had this to say about the trade rumblings in Pittsburgh...
I would expect more things could certainly happen. I wouldn’t bet on the team we have now being our roster on opening night, whenever opening night happens to be next season.
When asked about his goaltending situation, Rutherford told Yohe there isn't room for two..
We’re going to give both of them qualifying offers. That will be the first step. Well, I guess there is a possibility. Sure, there is a way we could do it. But to be honest, I just don’t think it’s something that would work for everybody.
Once the team gets a better understanding of Matt Murray and Tristan Jarry's contract figures for next season, that will make trades much easier to facilitate. Right now, the teams interested in goaltending include the Calgary Flames, Colorado Avalanche, Carolina Hurricanes, Buffalo Sabres, Ottawa Senators, and Toronto Maple Leafs.
Keep an eye on Rutherford this next week as the Pens GM tries to pull off another deal at the draft and free up some money to spend when free-agency opens on October 9th.
