Karl Alzner is Done in Montreal
The Montreal Canadiens have announced they will be buying out the remaining contract of LHD, Karl Alzner.
Alzner originally joined the Canadiens back in 2017 after 9 seasons with the Washington Capitals. While Alzner was supposed to blossom into a top-2 defenseman, he was never able to make Montreal home and struggled to play up to his contract. The deal he signed in Montreal was for five years at $23.1 million.
The Canadiens will take cap hits of $3.9 million this year, which goes down to $1.95 million next year, and $833,333 the next two years. A hefty price in the short-term for some long-term flexibility.
The Winnipeg Jets and Vancouver Canucks are two teams who appear to be interested in signing Alzner on the cheap for next season. Expect the LHD to receive a one-year league minimum contract for his next deal.
