Jeff Blashill Gives Explanation For Waiving Evgeny Svechnikov
Evgeny Svechnikov was drafted 19th overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. He has only played 20 NHL games with the Detroit Red Wings and it doesn't appear that he will get another shot this season.
The Red Wings placed Svechnikov on waivers today, leaving him vulnerable to be taken with nothing in return. This is unusual for any team to do with a former first round pick, but Head Coach Jeff Blashill has provided an explanation.
He (Svechnikov) has had a number of injuries and has not played a whole season where he can be properly evaluated by the team. They have to make strict roster decisions as Covid-19 protocols restrict teams to only their roster list.
Teams have until 12:00pm on Tuesday to claim Svechnikov. Perhaps the Carolina Hurricanes will claim him and allow him an opportunity to play with his younger brother, Andrei Svechnikov.
