Many Teams Pursuing Detroit Red Wings’ Veteran Defenseman
The Detroit Red Wings have played uninspiring hockey since their season opening game. They have acquired players like Marc Staal who have 'deadline bait' written all over them. However, GM Steve Yzerman has been fielding calls about a reliable veteran defenseman.
The Philadelphia Flyers are in trade talks with the Florida panthers about swapping defenseman, but the Red Wings are on their radar as Plan B.
Jimmy Murphy of FHN has said that GM Chuck Fletcher could be active in the trade market sooner rather than later. Additionally, Murphy stated that the Flyers are scouting Danny DeKeyser of the Red Wings. DeKeyser's cap hit is currently $5 million, which could be problematic given the Flyers' limited cap space. Dekeyer was limited to 8 games in the 2019-20 season due to injury, but there's no indication this will be an issue in the future. The Flyers are rumored to have Shayne Gostisbehere on the table with the Florida Panthers, but this isn't necessarily the case for the Red Wings.
The New Jersey Devils are also reportedly interested in DeKeyser. The Devils currently have $6.635 million in available cap space, and they're much more competitive in the East Division than most had expected. Ty Smith has looked great so far, but the limited talent on their blueline is a gaping hole in their opportunity to create success.
