Oilers Reject Nugent-Hopkins Latest Contract Offer

The Edmonton Oilers have made one thing clear to all their pending free-agents, the team has an internal salary cap and they are sticking to their guns. Forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is going to learn this the hard way, unfortunately for him, as the long-time Oiler is up for contract renewal.

Word is the latest talks have not gone well, as RNH is looking for a hefty pay raise, meanwhile the team has their own number in mind.

Frank Seravalli of TSN reports, the Oilers will not go north of $7 million on any deal with RNH and that's the bottom line:

There is no question fan (and team) favourite RNH wants to remain in Edmonton. But to this point, negotiations have gone in fits and starts, and the Oilers have made it clear they have no plans to go north of $7 million per year on a long-term extension.

The 27-year-old Nugent-Hopkins will be looking to cash in so he's likely not going to be thrilled with the news considering he's already making $6 million a season and could probably fetch $8 million on the open market.

Last season with the Oil he finished with 61 points in 65 games and this season he's expected to hover again around a point a game pace. Hopefully for him, his agent can do some convincing sometime over the next few months.
