Red Wings To Trade Newly Acquired Marc Staal
Despite the woes of the Detroit Red Wings, General Manager Steve Yzerman has been able to take advantage whenever he can. Acquiring Marc Staal from the New York Rangers was a genius move, and dealing him may be another stroke of brilliance.
The only thing stopping a trade is Marc Staal's no trade clause. If he is willing to waive it, the Red Wings will be able to double dip on the benefits.
During the offseason, the Red Wings acquired Marc Staal and a 2nd round draft pick from the New York Rangers in exchange for future considerations. The Red Wings didn't give anything up and the Rangers were able to dump his $5.7 million cap hit; win-win.
Staal is in the final year of a 6 year contract and he is on the back nine of his career. The Red Wings are not Stanley Cup contenders and are likely to deal Staal to a team in need of veteran leadership and reliable defence. After acquiring a 2nd round draft pick, who knows what else Yzerman could retain after shipping away a free asset.
