The Boston Bruins To Retire Another Jersey Before Home Opener
The Boston Bruins have announced that they will lift a twelfth jersey to the rafters of TD garden. Willie O'Ree's No. 22 will hang from the rafters for his contribution as one of the NHL's greatest ambassadors.
O'Ree broke many barriers when he became the first black NHL's first black hockey player. Fans have been debating whether Zdeno Chara will have his number retired by the Boston Bruins, but he remains an active player with the Washington Capitals.
As an ambassador of the Boston Bruins and the NHL, O'Ree has empowered individuals of color to play the game of hockey and inspire them to achieve goals at the highest of levels. He will be honored for his social activism.
A well-deserved honor for one of our game's greatest ambassadors.
