Bob McKenzie Names 4 Teams Seriously Interested In Tony Deangelo

Tony Deangelo of the New York Rangers cleared waivers this week. General Manager Jeff Gorton has said that Deangelo has played his final game with the Rangers after a post game altercation with teammate Alexandar Georgiev broke the last straw. Bob McKenzie of TSN has listed 4 teams who have shown significant interest in acquiring him.

The Calgary Flames, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, and Anaheim Ducks are reportedly interested in acquiring Deangelo from the Rangers. Many are skeptical of this report because they could have claimed him off the waiver wire for free. However, his $4.8 million cap hit prevents most teams from picking him up off waivers because they would not be salary cap compliant. Instead, teams must trade an adequate amount of salary in return to ensure compliancy.

It has also been reported that the Rangers are willing to assume 33% of Deangelo's contract, which expires at the end of next season. Of all the teams showing trade interest, the Red Wings seem to be the most peculiar. Deangelo was selected 19th overall in the 2014 draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning. Who was the General Manager at the time? Steve Yzerman, current GM of the Detroit Red Wings. Although each team is doing their homework and assessing the risk, Yzerman may have the greatest insight into Deangelo's off ice character.

Is Deangelo worth the risk for an NHL team to trade for?
