Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings chase KHL's Third Leading Scorer


The Chicago Blackhawks and the Detroit Red Wings have both extended offers to the Kontinental Hockey League’s third leading scorer Damir Zhafyarov.


The 26-year-old 5-foot-9 170 lb undrafted right winger has tailed 20 goals, 58 points in 54 games so far this year with the KHL’s Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod who play in the Kharlamov Division.



Nikolai Lemtyugov of the Russian news outlet Sports Express reports that Zhafyarov is "determined to go to North America" and has offers in hand from both the Blackhawks and the Red Wings. 


Zhafyarov’s contract with Nizhny Novgorod expires at the end of the current season. 


During the 2013-14 World Junior Hockey Championships in Malmo, Sweden, Zhafyarov put up 3 goals, six points in seven games with the Russian club, capturing a bronze medal. He also played with the Russian Selects team in the 2012-13 Junior Super Series. 


Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod currently sit sixth in the KHL’s Eastern Conference. The regular season concludes Feb. 27. The top eight teams in each division qualify for the playoffs.
