Justin Abdelkader Leaving the NHL, Headed for Europe

Former Detroit Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader is on his way to play in Europe as the rugged forward has signed a deal with Switzerland's EV Zug.

The Red Wings bought out the remainder of his contract in late 2020 and now Abdelkader is ready to continue his hockey career across the pond. When the Red Wings bought him out, he had three years remaining on his deal with was costly the Wings $4.25 million on the salary cap.

Abdelkader, 33, went scoreless in 49 games last season for the Wings, posting only three assists. He was the classic case of career season in a contract year, and landed himself a seven-year contract worth $29.75 million. Unfortunately for him and the Wings, it just didn't work out like they hoped.

His new team's sports director had this to say about the NHL veteran joining their squad:

He has earned enough in his career and does not come to us for the money. He just wants to play again and present himself on the market, which is why his obligation practically does not burden our budget
