Maple Leafs Coach Reveals Auston Matthews Playing Through Injury
The Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Calgary Flames, 2-1 in overtime on Wednesday. The Leafs suited up short-handed as they were without Wayne Simmonds, Jake Muzzin, Joe Thornton, and goaltender Frederik Andersen and we found out after the game Auston Matthews may be the next player on the shelve.
Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe informed the media after the game that Matthews has been dealing with a wrist injury basically the whole season. On Wednesday night it was obvious something was off as he was getting treated at the bench between shifts and stopped taking faceoffs at one point.
Even through his wrist injury, Matthews is scoring in bunches and currently leads the league with 18 goals. Here's what his coach had to say about his health:
We'll see how he is. (The training staff) will continue to take care of him and monitor it. We don't think it's anything more at this point than what he's been dealing with virtually all season.
Auston Matthews (18-11—29 in 19 GP) can become the third player in the NHL’s modern era (since 1943-44) to score 20+ goals through 20 games played with the @MapleLeafs franchise in a single season. #NHLStats
