Maple Leafs News and Notes: Zach Hyman Day-to-Day with Injury, Andersen Gets a Night Off & More

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Zach Hyman is day-to-day with an undisclosed injury. The news came out before the team's game versus the Ottawa Senators Feb. 18.

"Hyman got banged up yesterday and is going to be day-to-day so he'll be out today," head coach Sheldon Keefe said in a pregame interview on NHL.com.

Nic Petan drew into the lineup in place of Hyman for Thursday's matchup versus the Senators.

In other Leaf news, Zach Bogosian was given the night off Feb. 18, with Mikko Lehtonen drawing in to replace him. Freddie Andersen also gets a rest, as Michael Hutchinson gets the nod for his first game this season.

On a somewhat alarming note, Keefe hinted that Andersen was has been dealing with "some things" that warranted the break.

"It's been a very busy schedule for Fred. He's been dealing with some things as well that just warns you that he needs some time off here," Keefe said.

Thornton Being Monitored

With Thornton returning recently from a broken rib, Keefe noted that he will be watching and monitoring the big forward's minutes.

"I'm always monitoring his minutes, so today will be no different," the coach said. Thornton came close to having a hat trick of goals called back Wednesday, with two disallowed goals against the Sens.

Thornton was involved in all three of the Maple Leafs' goals in the first period Thursday, planting himself in front of the net for a screen and getting an assist on Auston Matthews' powerplay marker at 10:29, scoring one for himself at the 16:42 mark and assisting again on another Matthews' goal near the end of the period.

Thornton missed 10 games with his latest injury and despite being on the puck and causing trouble for the Sens in the offensive zone all night Feb. 17, he ended the game without a point.

Matthews has enjoyed having him back on his line though. "He's been all over it in these two games he's been back," Matthews said
