Canadiens GM Comments on Upcoming Trades

Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin is never shy from making bold moves for his hockey clubs, as we've all seen in the past. This season however, it's going to be real tough for Bergevin to make a move as the Canadiens are cap crunched. The Habs GM met with the media recently and had this to say about his team's next move:

We have no cap space, so I mean it's money in, money out. Expectation to do something at the deadline is probably very unlikely. We do have conversations daily, but at the end of the day you go back to always the cap. Once you become a team against the cap, it's money in money out unless you start giving up assets. Honestly, I'm not worried about it. I like our team, we'll make the best of the situation of the condensed schedule for the rest of the year, but I still like our team a lot.
The Canadiens, like most teams across the NHL, don't have much to work with. The team only has $1 million in cap space according to CapFriendly. The only positive lately is the fact the Canadian government is approving a 7-day quarantine for NHL players instead of the standard 14-day, so this should help just a touch with the potential of deals to take place. The Habs are currently not playing any games due to COVID protocols as they've had their last four games postponed. The time off gives Bergevin lots of opportunity to scout other teams, perhaps someone catches his eye.
